A teenage boy and his brother have been charged in the murder of the teen’s Chicago girlfriend who was pregnant with his baby and shot during an attempted drug deal ripoff gone bad, police said Saturday.
The boyfriend, Anthony Lee, 16, and his brother, Diante Lamont Coakley, 21, both of Dolton, were charged with first-degree murder in the slaying of Eva Casara, 17.
Casara was 5 ½-months pregnant when she was shot. She later died, but doctors were able to save her baby girl, who is in critical condition in the hospital fighting for her life.
Casara was “just in the wrong place at the wrong time with the wrong company,” said Dolton Police Chief John Franklin, who declined to provide many details about the crime.
Dolton Police said they are searching for a third suspect as well, Franklin said.
Lee and Coakley were taking part in a drug deal when it “spiraled out of control,” and the two began firing their guns, and Casara was hit, police said.
Casara was not an intentional victim, Franklin said, but he declined to say the shooting was accidental.
“It’s hard to call it an accident when you’re firing a gun in the direction of people,” Franklin said. “Our information is that all of the subjects charged were firing in the direction where she was hit.”
Police believe that after the teenage girl was shot, she was moved.
Casara was left in the snow between two homes in the 1100 block of East 152nd Street.
Casara’s aunt, Melody Vargas, said her niece had nothing to do with any drug deal.
“She was just a victim of their stupidity, and they need to pay for it,” said Vargas, 36.
Vargas said the family was not surprised to hear that the boyfriend was involved.
“He was the last person she was with that day. We were looking in his direction.”
“She was in love with him, and he was in love with her.”
“She was getting excited” [about the baby], her aunt said.
